Kabras Sugar are the 2016 Kenya Cup champions after beating ten-time winners Impala RFC 22-5 in yesterday’s final on a soaking wet Impala Club pitch.
Even the pounding rain could not stop the determined Millers from writing history on their second attempt in winning the cup as Mike Bishop’s boys made Impala look so ordinary at their own turf.
This was the third meeting between the two sides this season with each team winning one apiece in their two legged league encounters.
Impala beat Kabras 31-14 in the first leg, but the Millers turned tables on the Sarries to win the return leg 25-13.
At one point, the referees wanted to stop the match due to heavy downpour, but the spirited players insisted on continuing to play.
And just like last weekend’s 19-15 semi-final victory over Impala’s rivals Kenya Harlequins, the weather seemed to work in Kabras’ favour again.
The Millers went ahead through Fabian Olando’s penalty kick before Brian Tanga made it 8-0 with an unconverted try. Olando then kicked over another penalty to hand the Kakamega-based outfit an 11-0 lead.
However, Samson Onsomo pulled a try back for Impala, touching down on the stroke of half-time to make the scores 11-5.
But experienced Anthony Ogot put the game beyond Impala’s reach with his unconverted try just four minutes into the second half before instrumental Olando curled over two penalties to secure their first Kenya Cup title.
