Homeboyz RFC won the Great Rift Blazing Sevens Championships title at Nakuru Athletic Club over the weekend.

Homeboyz won two matches, drew one and lost one, scoring a total of seven points in the five team competition that attracted clubs from the Kenya Cup and Erick Shirley Shield Leagues.

In her matches, Homeboyz first drew 12-12 with Nakuru RFC, defeated Kabras 19-5, smashed Nakuru II 15-7 but lost 15-0 to Wakulima.

Tournament Director Lameck Ongati said they were preparing teams for the National Sevens Circuit season that kicks off next month.

“We needed time to improve on fitness of players by engaging them in this tournament ahead of the National Sevens Circuit season coming over in a few weeks,” Ongati told FeverPitch at Nakuru Athletic Club on Saturday.

Homeboyz dislodged Kabras RFC and Wakulima from the top position on a superior point aggregate after they all tied on seven points apiece.

Kabras were runners up with seven points from two wins, a draw and a loss ahead of Wakulima also on seven points from four matches. Wakulima had two victories, a draw and a loss.

Wakulima who were inspired by former National Sevens Team player Oscar Ouma now a professional in Sri Lanka defeated hosts Nakuru RFC 22-7, hit Homeboyz 15-0 before being forced to a barren draw by Kabras RFC. They (Wakulima) lost 24-0 on a walk over after they failed to play Nakuru II.

Ouma said he has started serious training eyeing a slot into the National Team that will fight to qualify for next year’s Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

“When it comes to Olympics, no player is willing to be left behind and it is the reason I’m back to fight for one of the places,” he said.

Hosts Nakuru RFC, who produced two teams, emerged fourth with four points from a victory, a draw and two loses.

After a 12-12 draw against Homeboyz in their opening match, Nakuru RFC went ahead to inflict a 26-14 win to their second string side Nakuru II but lost her last two matches 12-17 against Kabras and 7-22 against Wakulima.

It was a sad day for Nakuru II who trailed with three points despite the home support from their hilarious fans after they won one match and lost two.
