AK PRESIDENT ISAIAH KIPLAGAT MEET HIS VICES JACKSON TUWEI,DAVID OKEYO & PAUL MUTWI

Intrigues continue ahead of Athletics Kenya’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) set for May 30. Some of the 14 AK’s renegade regional chairmen have dismissed AK President Isaiah Kiplagat’s decision to appoint Jack Tuwei, the AK vice President, as acting president of the federation.

But Paul Mutwii, who was elevated from vice president in charge of technical to senior deputy vice president, remained non-committal.

“That was just a proposal which the executive agreed upon. The whole thing must be tabled during the AGM so that the electorate can deliberate on it. If they say yes to it, is okay. If they say no, then they will make proposals on the kind of amendments to be made,” said Mutwii, who has been the chairman of the group of renegade branch chairmen.

Barnaba Korir, the AK chairman for Nairobi, said they will not support the decision to have Tuwei appointed as acting president.

“That’s unconstitutional and we will take it head-on during the AGM,” said Korir.

Nicholas Maswai, the AK Prisons national secretary, concurred with Korir, saying: “We should allow the constitution to guide us. Tuwei does not deserve the post. We will discuss this during the Annual General Meeting on May 30.”

On Monday, two-time Boston Marathon winner Moses Tanui faulted the appointment of Tuwei, who finished third in the AK elections, saying it entrenches favouritism and tribalism in sports.

At the 2013 polls, David Okeyo captured the first vice president’s seat with 56 votes, while Paul Mutwii was second with 49 votes. Tuwei, who garnered 40 votes, was third. Jonathan Koskei finished fourth with 25 votes, while Dan Muchoki got four votes.
