Nairobi: The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission boss Philip Kinisu was Monday questioned by police over criminal culpability in a probe touching on his family company.

Kinisu had been summoned to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation, Kiambu Road for grilling and statement recording on how his family company Esaki Limited won government tenders worth millions of shillings.

Apart from Kinisu, his wife Mary is also expected to be questioned by the detectives handling the matter.

He drove to DCI offices at about 10am in the company of a lawyer and left at about 11.30am. He declined to talk to the media that had been camping outside waiting for him.

Kinisu was questioned by head of investigations at DCI John Kariuki and informed him he was going to join other EACC officials at Parliament to give their status of probe into Chickengate scandal on IEBC officials.

Ordinarily, detectives would seek an appointment with Kinisu and go to his office for his statement.

Among the tenders under probe is the supply of goods to the National Youth Service (NYS), which is under investigations by the anti-corruption agency. He was also asked to explain the tenders the company won at the ministry of health.

The saga surrounding the tenders was brought to the public limelight after Bunge La Mwananchi wrote to EACC linking Esaki to Kinisu.

Three activists working with the agency were last week grilled at the DCI on how they knew about the tenders. They provided the DCI with documents on the issues and officials said the activists are expected to be witnesses in the case if and when it gets to court.
