Hurdler Bett feels pressure of being world champion

World 400m hurdles champion Nicholas Bett admits to feeling the pressure to replicate his sterling performance in the event dominated by American athletes.

Bett finished sixth in the Shanghai Diamond League and returns to the track tomorrow, eager to banish the China misstep.

“I miscalculated my steps at the last hurdle, allowing my challengers to close in and overtake me,” Bett said after touching down in Eugene, Oregon for the Pre-Fontaine Classic.

“Everyone now knows me as the World champion. So this brings additional pressure. I will have to learn to handle it anyway because that is the prize of being the world champion.”

Bett, however, maintains his quest for the Olympics is going on according to plan. “I am training well and the Diamond League will not be a distraction.

Bett stunned the world last year by fending off Michael Tinsley to win gold in 47.79 seconds.
