Senator Mike Sonko: The latest celebrity daddy in town?

Flamboyant Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko could be the latest daddy in town.

Leaked photos of a rather elated Senator holding a new-born baby and a woman surfaced this week. The two appear happy as they admire the child.

It is alleged they have been romantically involved since 2011. The Nairobian has learnt that the mystery woman is the daughter of a sitting politician from Central Kenya.

Further, Sonko, who is famous for unhinged political tongue- lashing and spontaneous streaks of philanthropy is alleged to have even build a beautiful house for her.

A source revealed that on different occasions, Sonko, has not shied away from introducing her to close his friends as his ‘second wife.’ Speaking to The Nairobian, our sources, claimed that they all knew the woman was pregnant , but she kept it a secret.

“We are aware she was pregnant, though we didn’t want to reveal much. The said lady is his youngest wife whom he adores. We are happy for them.”

Even though Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko is married and has three daughters namely; Saumu, Salma and Sandra, he has on several occasions been taken to court by other women demanding child support. One was Josephine Thuku. In 2014, Senator Sonko owned up to being the father of a son with Josephine Thuku, a woman from Kwale, Mombasa County, who had sued him for child upkeep.

Sonko admitted that the two were long time lovers and that he fathered the woman’s first-born child, but denied being the father of the second child.

The flamboyant senator has vowed to fight the suit that seeks to commit him to provide for the two children.

Sonko told The Nairobian that he bought the woman a car, which he later confiscated, and stopped giving her money after they disagreed.

Josephine wanted the court to force the Senator to provide her with a monthly maintenance of Sh140,000 that includes Sh100,000 for food and upkeep, Sh10,000 for clothing, Sh10,000 for medical expenses and Sh20,000 as house allowance.

Sonko said he was ready for the case, adding that he does not need a lawyer in “a straightforward matter like this one.”

Coincidentally, Josephine Thuku also said she did not intend to hire a lawyer because; “I am afraid a lawyer will be compromised,” she charged without elaborating.

When The Nairobian spoke with the Senator, he admitted knowing Josephine Thuku and admitted that she was his girlfriend but claimed he only fathered a boy- with her.

“I know this woman and her first born is my child whom I am taking care of by paying school fees,” said Sonko adding that Josephine had access to a supermarket where she shops at his expense.

Sonko clarified that “I am not the father of the second child and I am ready for a DNA test if she insists,” and added that he can support the second child on ‘humanitarian’ grounds since “Whenever I shop for my son, I also include the other child in my shopping list. I however, do not give a single penny to their mother.”

But Josephine said that while Sonko’s philanthropy is known, he had neglected the boy to punish her.

“He proved that he is not interested in our son when he claimed that the boy is in Class Six when in fact, he is a Class Eight candidate,” claimed Josephine adding that “Sonko has destroyed my life.”

Josephine came to know Sonko way back in 1990 when she was in class eight, although they began their relationship two years later: “I was a Form Two student when he became my boyfriend and swore undying love for me. Little did I know that things would turn out the way they have.”

Josephine claimed after Sonko left Shimo la Tewa Prison he went looking for her, but she kept off until she finished college and got her diploma.

“I then went against my parents’ wishes and moved in with him,” she says, adding that things turned sour after she got her first child and “I had to go to my parent’s home to heal. My life has been a living hell since.”

According to Josephine, Sonko preferred calling on her at the Coast and giving her money in hotels while promising to live with her in Nairobi but he never kept the promises.

“What sort of a father refuses to support his children because he is not in good terms with the mother?” Josephine paused. Apparently, Sonko confiscated her car, forcing the children who were used to being driven to walk.

“My son is a very bitter young man as he gets to hear how his father takes care of other kids in the country while he is neglected. He has been forced to weather the mockery of other children who deride him, because his father passes through Kwale splashing cash and never bothering to visit him.

“He takes his family on expensive holiday trips, sleeping in posh hotels and travelling all over the world, while my sons are languishing,” fumes the mother of two.

“If he is as philanthropic as he would like people to imagine, he would ensure that all his children are treated equally,” explains Josephine. Even if I find it within my heart to forgive him some day, I will never forget what he has put me and my children through. It has been quite traumatic,” she said.
