MP Dennis Waweru: Install CCTV in all schools

Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru

NAIROBI: Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru on Friday suggested that security cameras be installed in boarding schools to catch arsonists and stop the attacks.

He urged the Ministry of Education to make it mandatory for all boarding schools to install CCTV cameras to stop the burning of dormitories witnessed in many institutions.

“This will be a visual deterrent to many criminal activities, not only arson,” said Mr Waweru.

He was speaking in Ruthimitu Secondary School in his constituency. The school’s dormitory went up in flames on Tuesday night.

Waweru’s suggestion comes a day after Education CS Fred Matiang’i presented an interim report on unrest in schools and announced formation of a joint investigation team to unravel the cause of the fires. Some head teachers who have over stayed at their stations, clan politics and indiscipline have been cited as some of the possible reasons for the fires.

About 68 schools have had fire incidents in the last two months, with 6,000 students being sent home. Some 15 school heads are being investigated.
