Educated NYS youths being cheated

Kenya: The Ministry of Devolution, headed by Anne Waiguru, is doing a commendable job especially in cleaning our informal settlements. In both Kiambu and Nairobi counties for instance, the projects being championed by NYS are visible for all and sundry to see.

However, that is where the good news ends. I strongly feel that these young Kenyans are being cheated by the Government. The kind of work they are assigned is what county governments are supposed to do.

The residents of countries are paying taxes for service delivery. It is the mandate of county governments to unblock drainage systems. The staff of county governments are drawing salaries every month from taxes levied. It is ridiculous that we have engaged the youth to do the work of county staff!

Some of the youth engaged by NYS are highly learned graduates. It is very unfair for the Government to take advantage of their unemployment to subject them to demeaning treatment. It is only fair that we all respect the value of their certificates.

If we want the youth to appreciate the need for sound education, let us treat our educated youths with dignity.

Asking them to join NYS in trimming grasses on road sides is to ridicule time and resources spent in educating them in school.

There is no inspiration in subjecting young, educated and energetic youths in clean-up exercises in the name of community service! Just what example are we setting for the youth toiling in the colleges and universities who are denied themselves comfort and youthful luxury so as to get good grades?

Jubilee endeared itself to the youth by promising them employment once elected to office. As a result, many youthful voters cast their ballot in favour of Jubilee with the assumption that they would be considered for State appointments.

However, when the Government recently announced over 300 State corporations appointments, only one was a youth.
