Thief caught on camera blasting ATM with dynamite to steal cash

Brazil: A brazen thief has been caught on CCTV as he uses dynamite to blast his way into a cash machine.

The attack was recorded by a security camera in an ATM vestibule in Ponta Grossa, Brazil on Wednesday.

In the video, a man wearing a white hooded jumper and carrying a black bag approaches the cash point.

He attempts to prise open a drawer in the machine before inserting what appears to be a stick of dynamite and setting it alight.

The man is then seen making a run for it as sparks fly and the machine suddenly explodes.

He then returns to the scene to collect whatever it left in the debris.

Brazilian news website Parana RPC reported that a gang with five members had been arrested in June after police discovered 45kg of dynamite - enough to blow up 120 ATMs.

Police commander Silvanei Almeida Gomes said: "We spent six months investigating this gang.

"There are strong indications that this year they are responsible for 11 cases of theft at ATMs."

It is not clear whether the man in the latest CCTV footage is associated with the gang.
