Teacher, 24, 'sexually assaulted pupil' and 'gave child alcohol'

A high school science teacher is accused of sexually assaulting a student and distributing alcohol to a minor.

Kayla Mooney, from Connecticut, US, turned herself in on Tuesday following a seven-week investigation, the News Times reported.

It is the third arrest of a teacher for alleged sexual offences in the area since February.

The 24-year-old taught science to first year students at Danbury High School.

She was charged with felony second-degree sexual assault and the misdemeanor alcohol charge, NY Daily News reports.

Sal Pascarella, the superintendent of the city's schools, would not provide details about the allegations, only telling the News Times that the alleged incident happened off campus late last year.

We are all very disappointed that this has happened to one of our faculty members," he said.

In February, two other teachers in Connecticut were arrested on suspicion of sex offences.

Former Wilton public schools teacher and Sacred Heart University instructor Timothy Leonard, 37, was charged with fourth-degree sexual assault involving a 14-year-old boy on February 11.

Former Bethel first-grade teacher Brian Stroh also resigned on February 19 after being charged with sexually abusing three children, ages six, nine and 11, the News Times reported.

Both of them have been bailed while the investigations continue.

Meanwhile, Mooney was released without bail and a court appearance was scheduled for April 14.
