KNUT threatens to sue government at the National Labour Centre over North Eastern teachers row

Kenya: KNUT has accused the government of complacency and threatened to refer the dispute pitting Teachers Service Commission and North Eastern teachers to National Labour Centre.

KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion, said that other Kenyans working in North Eastern are situated in the town centre where there is ample security and good working conditions whereas the schools are located in the remote areas.

Sossion warned the government against intimidating teachers and stated that contract of personal service cannot be compelled.

“The affected teachers have sworn not to risk their lives but instead are ready to face the consequences. It is about their lives not their jobs. It is about their wish to see tomorrow alive not to earn. It is time the employer takes the steps proposed by the union to remedy this situation.” Read part of the statement.

KNUT said they understand the plight of children and their education but they also share in the grief, emotional torture and life uncertainties of the teachers working in North  Eastern and their families

“The teachers are ready to take this matter further to National Labour Centre for possible recourse if the TSC continues to intimidate and address labour issues through the media as political palate forms rather that the proper channels. Teachers shall continue to agitate to protect their rights at all costs.” The statement read.

They urged the government to fully integrate the affected teachers in whatever action they have purportedly ta taken to secure their safety rather than the casual nature of address through the media.
