Nurses threaten to join teachers' strike

Nurses have threatened to join teachers in their strike if the Government fails to address their issues in seven days.

Kenya National Union of Nurses (Knun) Secretary General Seth Panyako, asked President Uhuru to move fast and address issues raised by the teaching fraternity.

Panyako said the issues raised by Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) are valid and the State ought to give them an ear.

“...it is an open secret that the State is not keen on addressing the teachers’ stalemate with urgency. We are standing in solidarity with teachers because we are also parents,” said Panyako.

He said it was time all trade unions worked in unity for a unified and stronger force.

“All trade unions in the public sector have made a resolution to work together to ensure efficiency to ensure the government takes us seriously,” he added.

Panyako, however, stressed that trade unions are willing to avert public confrontations by engaging in dialogue.

He was speaking at Uasin Gishu District Hospital after engaging Uasin Gishu County officials on the way forward over the health workers employed under the Economic Stimulus Programme.

Meanwhile, Panyako lauded the Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia, for sending 170 health workers from the country to West Africa to help contain the Ebola.

“I talked to the CS this morning and he assured me that the welfare and safety of the health workers will be well taken care of by the European Union,” he said.
