Family in Kitengela abandons lazy relative in their house after he overstays visit

A family in Nairobi’s Kitengela estate stunned neighbours when they moved houses and left behind their visiting relative whom they accused of being lazy and not committed to look for a job.

The embattled man, a father of three, is said to have been living with his relatives for over three months.

His relatives got fed up with him after it became clear that he had become too comfortable and was no longer looking for a job — the main reason he had visited them.

The jobless man had been staying indoors, praying and hoping for a miracle to get a job. His brother-in-law said he was lazy and not serious with his life.

The besieged man only identified as Wekesa had been urged by his hosts to look for any other job, even if it meant working at a construction site, as he awaited a better job but in vain.

Feed many mouths

What’s more, Wekesa’s stay had caused a rift between his sister and her husband, so much that they quarreled almost on a daily basis, with Wekesa’s sister always defended him and urging her husband to be patient with him.

A neighbour who overheard them fight said: “Wekesa’s brother-in-law (a matatu driver) complained he was overwhelmed and was not able to feed the many mouths in his home as his salary was meagre. Wekesa’s sister had come to his defense, saying that her brother needed to be given just a little more time.”

But to the woman’s shock, last Saturday while preparing supper, her husband arrived from work and ordered her to stop cooking and pack all their belongings.

“We are moving to a different house and it cannot accommodate all of us. Your brother who will remain here, unless you have some arrangement to help him,” roared the angry husband.

Thinking she could easily convince her husband over the matter, she said that her brother was jobless and could not afford Sh6000 for rent, but her husband stood his ground.

“Let me warn you that I will leave you here with your brother if you cannot abide by what I am telling you,” hissed the no nonsense husband adding that: “No! No! I cannot continue to feed a man who is not crippled and cannot do anything to put food on the table.”

The woman who could not believe her ears on the turn of events, broke into tears and prepared supper crying uncontrollably. Immediately after super, the family left leaving the troubled relative in an empty house.

Neighbours are afraid that things might not work out for Wekesa seeing as he is jobless. “This man might not survive here long, it is just a matter of time before he is thrown out over rent,” said a neighbour.
