Errol Christie dead, British boxing legend loses long fight with lung cancer

Frank Bruno has led the tributes to boxing great Errol Christie, who has died after a long battle with lung cancer.

Christie, 53, was the captain of the English amateur boxing team from 1980 to 1983 and European amateur champion in 1983.

After turning professional he was a regular fixture on ITV Fight Night in the 1980s.

Former world heavyweight champ Bruno tweeted: “God rest his soul. Such a talented man. RIP.”

Another ex-world champion, Barry McGuigan, tweeted: “So sad to hear the news that the hugely talented Errol Christie has passed away. God bless you Errol, RIP.”

His nephew, footballer Cyrus, played last night in Ireland’s 1-1 draw with Austria.

He was close to Errol and posted on Twitter: "RIP champ legends never die..heart is broken rest in paradise uncle your not in pain anymore..till we meet again."

Earlier this month, Derby defender Cyrus told the Mirror that Errol, told him he was struggling to fight on.

He said: "I went down to visit him ­because he’s only got a while left and he could pass while I’m away with the national team. It could have been the last time I see him. I had to go and give my wishes.

“He told me he can’t fight ­any more, it’s too much for him now — and he’s always been positive. That’s the first time I’ve heard anything negative coming from his mouth.

"It’s been a tough time for my family, but we carry on and they’ll support me and look forward to these games. His career was phenomenal and there were some records that can’t be beaten.

“He will live long in the ­memory. He’s got a great fanbase and people in boxing love him. He’s world-renowned and everyone is rooting for him.

"He’s paved the way for our ­generation to do what we’re doing. The struggles and the ­trials and tribulations he came through were fantastic. It gives you the courage to carry on and come through ­adversity.”
