Six skin secrets of jojoba oil

There is one oil that is not native to Africa that is a great investment for your skin. Jojoba oil originally comes from the Americas and has been used by native Indian tribes for centuries.

It is extracted from a nut but it is actually a vegetable oil. However, unlike olive oil or any other vegetable oil, it closely resembles human sebum in its composition.

Here are a few reasons why it is worth introducing into your regimen:

1. Jojoba oil is hypoallergenic: Since it does not irritate the skin or eyes, it can safely be used to remove eye make-up. It is also safe enough for babies, or as a carrier oil for therapeutic essential oils.

2. Jojoba oil is highly moisturizing: It is rich in antioxidants and emollients but does not clog your pores or feel heavy on your skin like some butters do. Use it as a healthy alternative to night cream. A little goes a long way so be sure to limit your usage to just a few drops.

3. Jojoba oil is excellent for oil pulling: When cleansing a dirty face or a face full of make-up, apply a layer of jojoba oil and let it stay for sometime. The oil will pull out debris and remove surface dirt. Wipe clean with a damp microfibre towel or a warm wet hand towel.

4. Jojoba oil is rich in vitamin E: For this reason it works wonders when regularly massaged into the skin to reduce scars and stretch marks. High in vitamin A, and D, it has a strong potential to regenerate cells. Bear in mind that the changes may take a long time to notice but reports indicate that it is highly beneficial for treating skin tissues.

5. Jojoba oil is a smart oil: 'Smart' in the sense that it can trick your skin into thinking it has produced enough oil. This is because its mildly waxy formulation is so similar to natural sebum that it lasts much longer on your skin than other vegetable oils. Also, it is good for oily or acne prone skin because the skin starts to reduce oil production to compensate for this extra 'sebum' it thinks it has produced.

6. Jojoba oil is a potent anti-inflammatory agent: This means it soothes irritated, angry and tired skin. It is beneficial for conditions like eczema, psoriasis and sunburn as well as aging spots and wrinkles.

Where can jojoba oil be purchased? Natural hair and skin product vendors, health food shops and some larger pharmacists will stock it here in Kenya.
