Kenya and Tanzania posted mixed results in a football tournament to mark the World Sports Journalists Day in Nairobi.

The global professional event was sponsored by Kenya’s official Rio Olympics partner, Tusker, and was marked in Kenya with a football tournament at the Railways Club Nairobi. Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) won the men’s match 5-1 as their women counterparts suffered at the hands of Tanzania Sports Writers Association (TASWA) divas.

Post-match penalties condemned SJAK to a 4-3 loss to Taswa’s women’s team after a barren draw during regulation time.
SJAK’s treasurer Evelyne Watta and Standard newspaper’s reporter Elizabeth Mburugu failed to convert after Taswa custodian Somoe Njitu stopped their shots.

Taswa scored through captain Lightenes Sirikwa, Anjela Musanji, Asha Muhaji and Esther Zelamula as SJAK scored via Consolata Makokha, Mercy Njue and Rebecca Jebet.

SJAK chairman Chris Mbaisi said they invited Tanzanian sports journalists to celebrate with their Kenyan counterparts with a view to enhancing the East African Community (EAC) partnerships by bringing on board professionals in the sporting arena. TASWA Secretary Amir Mhando thanked SJAK for the invitation and promised to host Kenyan scribes in Dar es Salaam after Olympic Games in Rio.

“The event has been a long-term plan conceived in Baku during the AIPS Congress. I’m glad that this has come to fruition and we hope to take the event to the next level,” Mhando said.

During the event, TASWA lady Lightness Sirikwa won the Most Meritorious Trophy for playing in both the men’s and women’s match.
