A section of Kisii leaders have called for a political party to spearhead the community’s interests.

The leaders made the announcement during a rally in Nyaribari Chache on Friday.

Leaders present were Kisii County Senator Chris Obure, Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Mangi, County Women MP Mary Otara, Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka, Bomachoge Borabu MP Joel Onyancha and former CIC Chairman Charles Nyachae.

They said the political party will ensure leadership that will bring change and address the community’s demands.

“Let’s sit and agree on the formation of a political party. We know we are ready for this and nothing should stop us from achieving our goals. We are tired of supporting others to advance their interests,” said Mr Onyonka.

Obure said the community is ready to take a new political dimension.

“Our basic responsibility is to fight for the welfare of our people,” he said.

He added: “We have no intention of isolating anybody. We must organise our politics. Other communities have established their own political parties and there is no sense in always drumming support for other individuals.”

Mr Maangi who read a statement on behalf of the group, said their objective is to transform the region and ensure sustainable development.

He said the initiative is aimed at empowering the community socially, culturally, politically and economically.

Obure announced that they agreed to search for a platform to enable the Kisii have a strong bargaining power.

Mr Nyachae disclosed that several people have approached him to announce his political interest and guide the community. He supported the leaders' bid to unite community.

“We have a role to support development initiatives in our community but this can only be achieved by coming together,” he said.

Ford People Interim Chairman Albert Nyaundi also said the party will support efforts to unite the community.

“We have revamped our party and we support fully the initiative. Ford People remains the party of choice in this region and any move to unite the community is welcome,” said Eng Nyaundi.
