As the world marks the World Sickle Cell Awareness Day today, there is a message of hope. In commemoration of the day, a number of activities have been held in various parts of the country to raise awareness on the disease.
Saturday, Ongea, a platform where survivors and experts discuss all things Sickle Cell was held at the Aga Khan Hall, Kisumu. Dennis Awich of Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation says this day is dedicated to providing resources, information, education, research, and support for the affected.
He adds that there is sufficient evidence that Sickle Cell Disease is not a death sentence and those affected can lead full, healthy lives. The theme of this year's event 'Educate and Unite' will also act as a call to action for unity amongst the affected.
