TIME FOR COMEBACK: National volleyball coach Lung'aho asks for good show in Grand Prix matches in Poland

Grand Prix Volleyball Kenya national women volleyball team coach David Lung'aho speaks to Ruth Jepngetich during a timeout against Croatia at the FIVB Grand Prix in Croatia on August 1, 2014.

After a series of losses in the ongoing FIVB World Grand Prix Group Two tournament, Kenya national women’s volleyball head coach David Lung’aho has urged his charges to start winning again.

It was rather a disappointing outing for Malkia Strikers in the Tucuman leg and Lung’aho has asked the girls to focus on putting a good show in this weekend’s second leg of Grand Prix in Wloclawek, Poland.

Many Kenyan players will want to quickly forget the Tucuman tournament, where they lost all their three round one matches and in straight sets. Hosts Argentina were responsible for Kenya’s first loss, before Bulgaria and the Dominican Republic ensured Malkia Strikers would leave the tournament empty-handed.

But after a grueling 24-hour flight from Argentina, the team finally arrived in Wloclawek City and the celebrated tactician has now called on his players to remain focused.

According to Lung’aho, the girls should try and bounce back in the second round that serves off tomorrow.

The nine-time African champions will begin their campaign tomorrow night (7:10pm) with a clash against Puerto Rico, to whom they lost in straight sets during the World Olympic qualification tournament.

They will then take on hosts Poland on Saturday before wrapping up their preliminary fixtures against Argentina on Sunday.

“We arrived safely and thank God for that. I think we are ready and focused for the three matches ahead of us.

“We lost the other three matches in Tucuman, but that’s in the past now and we must focus on what is coming. We know it will not be easy, but we need to win some matches here. That’s exactly what we are planning for,” said Lung’aho.

His sentiments were shared by Kenya Pipeline middle blocker Triza Atuka, who outlined the importance of the second leg, saying it will decide their Group Two status.

“For now, we just want to put our best foot forward and get something positive. It will be important for us to get some points here,” said Atuka.
