Three suspects arrested as police seize 200 bags of contraband sugar from Uganda

Police have seized a consignment of 200 bags of sugar smuggled in from Uganda.

Three suspects were also arrested when the lorry carrying the commodity valued at Sh1.2 million was intercepted at Chepchoina along the Suam-Kitale highway.

Endebess OCPD Wilfred Mongare said officers working on a tip-off stopped the lorry and discovered the sugar on Monday night.

Mr Mongare said the sugar had been repackaged using materials belonging to Butula and Nzoia sugar companies.

The consignment is said to have been sneaked into the country by unscrupulous businessmen before being repackaged.

"We have established that the sugar had been ferried into the country by boda boda through unmarked entries," he said.

Mongare said the driver of the lorry and two loaders are helping police with investigations.

The seizure comes weeks after reports emerged that criminals were smuggling firearms from Uganda for sale in Trans-Nzoia and Bungoma.
