Bungoma commercial sex workers to be rehabilitated

The county government will put up a rehabilitation centre for commercial sex workers and street children.

The Bungoma county assembly passed the Street Children and Teen Prostitution Bill that paves way for the county administration to do so.

Speaking at Bulosi Primary School in Bumula, assembly speaker John Makali said they were negotiating with development partners to help fund the project.

Mr Makali said the rehabilitation centre would also house teenage girls engaging in prostitution along the highways especially at Kanduyi and Bukembe where drivers of heavy commercial vehicles pitch camp.

“Deaths, poverty, unemployment and wrangles in families among others are the major contributors to child prostitution in Bungoma. The county government, the national government and other players should put in place measures to curb this problem,” he said.

The speaker said the bill had also proposed the establishment of a free feeding programme for all nursery pupils which will be funded by the county government.
