Former First Lady Lucy Kibaki

Residents are still mourning the death of former First Lady Lucy Kibaki in her native Nyeri.

Condolence books have been placed at the Deputy County Commissioners offices in Othaya, which is former president Mwai Kibaki’s ancestral home.

Nyeri County Government has also opened a condolence book at their headquarters.

At  Kibaki’s Kanyange home in Othaya, little activity is going on.

The home is still under the guard of General Service Unit (GSU) officers who would not let anyone in.

Residents have been observing a moment of silence in honour of the former First Lady in most functions held since her death on Tuesday morning.

In their tribute, local leaders say her legacy would live on.

Governor Nderitu Gachagua, Senator Mutahi Kagwe, Mukurweini MP Kabando wa Kabando and former Mathira MP Ephraim Maina eulogised Mama Lucy as a woman who commanded respect, admiration and affection from Kenyans.

“She was truly an icon in our national history and her legacy will continue to live on. The entire population of this county stands firmly with the Kibaki family at this time of grief,” said Gachagua in his condolence message.

Kagwe said Mama Lucy had helped raise fund  for many projects in Nyeri County.

“We shall miss her as ‘Nyerians’ and Kenyans,” the senator said.

Kabando termed Mama Lucy a strong defender of her family and who helped disadvantaged people.

“She has changed the fortunes of so many people,” he said.

Mr Gichuki Mugambi, who was Othaya Constituency Development Fund (CDF) chairman when Kibaki was MP, said Mama Lucy supported  youth empowerment and community health, and noted that she personally led the campaign tp create awareness about HIV/Aids.
