Principal ordered to re-admit expelled pregnant girls

Chelebei Secondary School Principal Peter Kororia is at loggerheads with the education office after he expelled 20 pregnant girls. Eight girls in Form Four were among those expelled from school.

County Director of Education Charles Anyika has since directed the principal to readmit all the girls.

He directed Mr Kororia to recall the girls, saying they had a right to carry on with their education.
Mr Anyika said the principal acted against the law by expelling the girls from the school simply because they were found to be pregnant.

One of the victims narrated to The Standard how the principal had ordered them out of school and vowed not to register them for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination.

"He told us that we were a big let down and an embarrassment to the school and the community. We were forced out of school by the watchman after an order from the principal," she said.

The school made headlines recently over the high number of pregnancies in its student population.

Anyika, who visited the institution at the weekend, said as much as they do not encourage teenage pregnancies,  school girls should be allowed to continue with learning if they conceive.
"Re-admit the students you expelled. These girls have a right to education," he said.
