Works on the Sh400 million Githurai-Mwihoko road in Ruiru have begun. Paul Kamande, a senior engineer at the Kenya Urban Roads Authority who graced the groundbreaking ceremony yesterday, said the project is expected to be completed by September 2017.

He urged locals to remove structures erected on the road reserve.

"I call upon you to take advantage of the new road since it will be a game changer for the village. It will help ease transport and encourage business. The road will have a drainage system, a footpath and street lights," said Mr Kamande.

Area MP Esther Gathogo said she was delighted that the perennial suffering of residents occasioned by the dilapidated road will be history.

She called for a truce between the national and county government on road matters, adding that the tussle over control would only delay construction of roads.

Elated residents broke into song and dance during the groundbreaking ceremony. Mathenge Muthoka, the chairman of K-Circular Matatu Sacco, which used to ply the route but stopped, said the road would give the industry a lifeline.
