A member of county assembly was yesterday charged with assaulting a watchman.

The court heard that on September 10 last year, Khalaba Ward Representative Okumu Majimbo assaulted and caused bodily harm to Sirengo Nyongesa.

Mr Nyongesa was manning Governor Kenneth Lusaka’s office during a demonstration against wheelbarrows that were claimed to have been bought at Sh109,000 each.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate John King’ori, Mr Majimbo denied the charges.

)Majimbo was represented by his lawyer Emmanuel Situma who asked the court to furnish him with the complainant’s statement.

“I am requesting this court to allow the police officers to give me the complainant’s statement to help me prepare well to represent my client because I don’t know who is the complainant in this case,” said Mr Situma.

The court ordered that Majimbo, a former Bungoma County Assembly majority leader, be released on a Sh50,000 bond or a cash bail of Sh30,000.

The courtroom was packed with Majimbo’s supporters and colleagues.

The case will be heard on February 28.
