Environment CS Judi Wakhungu faults governors over garbage disposal

Environment Cabinet Secretary Judi Wakhungu has slammed governors for failure to manage garbage disposal.

Prof Wakhungu said the governors had ignored policies and regulations the national government had set for waste management.

“The waste management as a devolved function is not working at all. I cannot cite any county where this is working... what is coming out is that the counties do not have the capacity to manage waste,” she said. The CS told members of the Committee of Implementation of House resolutions that governors and county governments often wait for the public to complain about filth before they act.

In a meeting with a parliamentary committee on Thursday, the CS revealed that the National Environment Management Authority has inadequate staff to deal with garbage menace in counties.

The House team led by chairperson, Soipan Tuya had questioned why there was a problem of garbage disposal in the country.
