EACC officials roughed up while searching Mwangi wa Iria’s home

Chaos emerged at the home of Muranga Governor Mwangi wa Iria Thursday morning where Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission detectives had raided in search for evidence over graft allegations.

The governor’s supporters stormed the home, roughed up officials and confiscated heaps of documents that were in the hands of the EACC officials.

The officials could be seen trying to seek refuge from the irate mob and were said to be holed up in the governor’s home, with all exits sealed.

The detectives raided the home along Katanga Road in Thika Town at about 6am and spent hours looking for evidence.

Officials said they were also targeting Wa Iria’s relatives and friends’ residences in Nairobi and Kiambu.

EACC spokesman Kirichi Marimba said they are investigating various issues following complaints against the governor.

“It is part of our probe and we are within the law for the searches. We will give you more information when the raids are over,” said Marimba.

It is not clear who the friends and relatives that are targeted in the raid are.

Officials said the officers had search warrants to carry out the exercise.

Wa Iria has been having issues with the commission after they arrested him last year over an electoral related offence, although the current offence has not yet been revealed.

Wa Iria stopped his planned prosecution in court after a higher court dismissed it. This followed his argument that he had been punished over the same by another court.

His aides read politics into the allegations of graft probe. Wa Iria has also been having issues with his deputy and Senator Kembi Gitura over his mode of management at the County.
