DPP Tobiko directs investigations into Eurobond billions

NAIROBI, KENYA: The Director of Public Prosecution Tobiko on Wednesday directed police and the anti-graft body to investigate Eurobond fraud allegations within ten days and report to him for action.

Tobiko wants the two bodies to interrogate record statements and obtain evidence from all parties concerned and forward the completed file to his office for perusal.

In the last couple of months, media has reported several allegations of misappropriation of Eurobond money. The opposition coalition through party leader Raila Odinga on Monday claimed that over Sh 100 billion from the Eurobond cannot be accounted for.

Raila said Eurobond was turning to be “one of the greatest theft in Kenyan history,” adding that Kenyans must be told about the missing monies. The Opposition luminaries said official statutory reports were giving contradicting figures and asked the National Treasury to publish details on Eurobond transactions within two weeks.

Through lawyer Paul Mwangi, the former premier has written to National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich and Principal Secretary Kamau Thugge who issued the sovereign bond on behalf of the Republic of Kenya. He has also written to Barclays Bank PLC, J.P Morgan Securities PLC, both of London and QNB Capital LLC of Doha, Qatar, and Standard Bank PLC of London as joint lead managers and joint bookrunners of the National Treasury. However, the Treasury has invited Raila to a meeting on Friday where they plan to provide him with the documents he has asked for.
