Granny, 88, dies as fire incidents on the rise

An 88-year-old woman died after her house caught fire in Rumuruti, Laikipia West sub-county. Regina Muthoni died in the fire that area MCA Joseph Suge said was suspected to have been caused by an electric fault. In another incident, a dormitory caught fire at Doldol Boys High School. The fire started in one of the cubicles, as students were attending evening studies.

School principal Lawrence Kariuki said the students had just reported back to school after the end of the nationwide teachers' strike.

He claimed that some electricians were testing a faulty generator, which could have caused the fire. "The generator had not been tested since the strike started. While the technicians worked on it, fire erupted," said Kariuki. Some 30 students lost their property.
