Court halts recruitment of 70,000 teachers on contract by TSC

Nairobi, Kenya: Court halts recruitment of 70,000 teachers on a 3-month contract by TSC following a case filed by Trade Union Congress of Kenya.

The Government had earlier started recruiting 70,000 teachers on contract basis to be posted to public primary and secondary schools across the country.

Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia had stated that 50,000 teachers were to be posted to primary schools and the other 20,000 to secondary schools to stand in for the striking teachers.

The teachers were to be hired on a three-month contract and were thereafter considered on priority basis for employment on permanent terms when vacancies arise.

Interested candidates were asked to submit their applications together with certified copies of certificates, transcripts, testimonials and national identification cards to the TSC County Directors of their respective homes counties.

KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion, however, termed the move as "primitive" and wondered where TSC will get money to pay the new teachers.
