Nakuru in battle for maiden Sevens title

National Sevens Series leaders Nakuru RFC hold their destiny as the final round of the circuit, the Kabeberi Sevens, takes place this weekend at the RFUEA Grounds.

The Wanyore, who have 76 points and are seeking their maiden national sevens title, are in Pool A alongside national and Kabeberi Sevens defending champions Kenya Commercial Bank, Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad and Technical University of Kenya.

Nakuru will lift the national title if they, either reach the Main Cup semi final, or the Plate final of this weekend’s leg. Both outcomes will see them take their tally to 91 points, if they finish fourth in the main cup, or finish with 88 points, if they play in the plate final.

Although, Wanyore are 11 points ahead of second-placed Kenya Harlequin, head coach Gibson Weru has warned his charges against complacency.

“Our fate is in our own hands, but it is not yet celebrations time as we still have a lot to do. If we slip, our opponents will take the advantage,” Weru told FeverPitch.

“There is no room for complacency and our focus is to win day one matches and the rest will surely fall in place. It’s a dream of all of us to be champions this year, which means we must remain focused to the end.”

Kenya Harlequin, who were eliminated from last weekend’s Prinsloo tournament at the quarterfinal stage, will battle with third-placed Strathmore Leos, Nondies and Makueni in Pool C.

Quins and Strathmore will be praying for a Nakuru downfall for them to have a realistic chance of claiming top honours. If that happens, then Quins will have to register a top three finish to win the overall crown. Leos chances of winning the overall trophy are pegged on them winning the Kabeberi Cup title, and hope that Nakuru and Quins fail to qualify for the main cup quarters.

Homeboyz are in Pool B with Mwamba, Western Bulls and JKUAT, while Impala are in Pool D with Kabras Sugar, Kisii and Catholic Monks.
