Fire guts 250-bed school dormitory

Migori, Kenya: Property of unknown value was destroyed when fire burned down a dormitory at Kanga High School in Migori County on Friday evening.

The incident occurred when students were in class for their evening studies and destroyed the entire dormitory that houses 250 students.

“We are counting loses at a time when students ought to be concentrating on their studies and preparing for their exams,” said Francis Otieno, the school’s deputy principal.

“There was no casualty as all the students were in class.” The students used water to stop the fire from spreading to other buildings before a fire engine from the Sony Sugar factory arrived.

Mr Otieno appealed for help from the national and county governments, saying the school will not send students home. Mark Nyamita, a parent, asked the county government to acquire fire engines urgently.
