Nakuru, Kenya: Nakuru ODM Chairman Peter Ndungunya Ole Osono, who opened fire at journalists covering a demonstration, has been arraigned in a Naivasha court to face two charges.

The suspect, who was escorted to court by Gilgil DCIO Joseph Owiti, was charged with firing at the journalists with the aim of killing or injuring them.

He also faced a charge of incitement to violence and disobedience of the law contrary to the penal code.

The charge stated that on May 22, 2015 in Oljorai village, Nakuru County, he discharged a bullet from a revolver.

The charge further stated that the act was calculated to bring death or physical injury to Raphael Munge, who is a journalist based in Nakuru.

The accused, who was represented by lawyer Catherine Kitili, faced a second charge of shooting at Evans Barnabas Asiba.

The charge noted that on the same day, using an ASTRA pistol and without lawful excuse, he shot at Asiba with the intent of bringing death to him.

Osono, who looked shaken, denied both charges before Naivasha Chief Magistrate Peter Gesora.

The prosecution led by State Counsel Henry Koima, told the court that they would prefer more charges against the accused.

The accused’S lawyer, however, objected to and applied to the court to get a copy of the charge sheet and the witness statements.

She termed as speculative the claim by the prosecution that her client would be charged with extra charges over the Oljorai incident.

In his ruling, the magistrate ordered that the prosecution supply the suspect with all documents pertaining to the case.

He set the bond at Sh500,000 and a surety of the same and set July 1 as the hearing date.

On Friday last week, Ole Osono opened fire at a group of journalists, who were covering a demonstration by Oljorai residents over a parcel of land allegedly grabbed by the accused.

Police have since confiscated the accused’s gun as part of their investigation.
