Pulse: When did you discover your interest to become a DJ? Trevor B: Last year in April when I was 14. We have decks at home so I started trying and my dad would teach me during the holidays.
P: Let’s get this right, when you say dad, you mean Vinnie Banton the artiste? T: Yes, that is my dad.
P: Is he the reason behind your inspiration, seeing as he is also a DJ? T: He is a big inspiration. I like how he does his work and the lifestyle he has. I love spinning and that’s what I want to do in future.
P: Do you only play at certain places, considering your age? T: Yes, I don’t play at clubs. My dad wouldn’t allow me. I play at certain events only. My last gig was at a basketball tournament in Karen and then at the Pulse Paintball Experience.
P: Being a DJ can be challenging while starting out. Did you ever feel like giving up? T: I felt like giving up at some point. It took me about two months to get it.
P: Seeing as you are a Standard Eight candidate, how do you balance? T: I only play for two hours on Fridays and Saturdays, and then I get busy with books.
P: What do your schoolmates think about you being a DJ? T: They like it a lot. They also want to learn.
P: Do you see yourself getting into music like your father? T: Maybe, but it is not something I would take up now.
P: Are you making money? T: Not yet, but my father pays me when I play at big events.
P: So which DJ do you think is the best in Kenya currently? T: I would say Joe Mfalme. He’s big and well-known and he plays well. I like the way he does his mixes.
P: How do you handle those songs that have an adult theme? T: Well, I don’t play them because my dad doesn’t allow it at all.
P: What is the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you while you were playing? T: I played a song while another one was still on in a different bpm (beats per minute). It sounded real awkward.
P: Which high school do you wish to join after you finish your Kenya Certificate of Primary Education? T: I would like to go to Dagoretti High because I have a lot of friends there.
P: Where do you see yourself five years from now? T: After high school I would like to join university and by then I will have built a name for myself.
