MPs back DP William Ruto on Dadaab refugee camp closure

A number of MPs have backed Deputy President William Ruto's call to close the Dadaab refugee camp, arguing it will be a key step in the fight against terrorism.

The leaders argued the refugee camp had been turned into training grounds for terrorists.

MPs Silas Tiren (Moiben), Zipporah Kering (Nandi County Woman Representative), Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), John Kiragu (Limuru) and Kabando wa Kabando (Mukurweini), and former nominated Kanu MP Mark Too claimed countries like Ethiopia, Uganda and Israel curbed border conflicts after closing "controversial" refugee camps.

"Some individuals are taking advantage of our liberal Constitution to make the quest to defeat terrorism unachievable. We need to change things and if need be, take the Constitution back to the Kenyans for an amendment of their key rights like security to be guaranteed," explained Mr Too.

Mr Tiren also accused the Judiciary of being an obstacle in the war against terrorism.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees has opposed the plan to close the camp.
