County awarded for gender balance, inclusivity

The county government has been awarded for advocating gender balance and incorporating people living with disability.

The award, issued by Gender and Disability Development Centre, reflects the county’s commitment to diversity in leadership, governance, excellence in service and excellence in creating an environment that is favourable for men, women and persons living with disability.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Gender Executive Esther Ndirangu said the county is running ‘Biashara Fund’ that aims to empower women, the youth and people living with disabilities. An elated Ms Ndirangu said the county government has met all the provisions stipulated in the Constitution with regard to governance.

She said the county cabinet comprises two-thirds women and the Public Service Board has ensured the third gender rule in all recruitments as well as ensuring minority groups are represented.

GREAT ACHIEVEMENT

The official said the county has purchased equipment for people living with disability worth Sh500,000 which include, polio boot/callipers, wheelchairs, tricycles, crutches, walking canes and white canes.

Ndirangu said there have also been concerted efforts leading up to civic education that sensitises residents on the need to elect women and people living with disabilities.

She said the county has also organised women forums to sensitise them on Government opportunities available to them.

“In order to meet the 30 per cent procurement rule, the county has partnered with Public Procurement Oversight Authority to educate the youth, women and people living with disability on how they can benefit from the new directive. Doing this has enabled these special groups to apply and be considered for tenders,” she said.

Ndirangu said her department is committed to fostering inclusivity and professional service delivery. The county has 12 constituencies. They are Thika, Ruiru, Juja, Kiambu Town, Kiambaa, Githunguri, Limuru, Lari, Kikuyu, Kabete, Gatundu South and Gatundu North.
