Sh5.8 billion Kisumu-Nyamasaria road now nears completion

Road works on the strategic Sh5.8 billion Kisumu-Nyamasaria road are nearly complete, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced.

The project, one of the key pillars of the Vision 2030, is jointly funded by the World Bank and the Government. The Nyamasaria-Kisian road project provides a vital link in the Northern Corridor transport route and is expected to reduce transportation costs, especially for heavy commercial vehicles destined for other countries through the Busia border.

The road works are being undertaken by Sinohydro Corporation Ltd. During a tour of the project, the World Bank, Director of Transport and ICT Global Practice Jose Luis Irigoyen expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of the works.

During the visit to the site that roped in top KeNHA officials, Irigoyen said the World Bank was happy with overall project implementation and pledged further support to infrastructure in Kenya. He was accompanied by the Practice Manager, Transport Unit (East and Central Africa) Ms Supee Teravaninthorn. The road starts at Nyamasaria, some 4.4km from the A1/B1 roundabout and proceeds towards Busia via the almost completed Kisumu by-pass to end at the Kisian road junction C27.

Some works that have been undertaken include; upgrading the section of the road between Nyamasaria to Ondiek junction into a dual carriageway as well as installation of a new bridge at Nyamasaria.

Others include construction of the single bituminous carriageway Kisumu Southern by-pass, starting from Nyamasaria and ending at Kondele (a distance of 3.3km), with overpasses at Nyamasaria and Kondele.

Similarly, the section between Otieno Oyoo junction and Obote Road has been constructed into a single carriageway. The dualling of the 1.5km stretch between Oginga Odinga and Busia Road leading to the new Kisumu International Airport junction is ongoing, and expected to be completed soon.
