Muntu, Njeri win Jubilee race at Safaricom Stadium

John Muntu and Monica Njeri won during the inaugural Silver Jubilee 10km Road Race at Safaricom Stadium, Kasarani, at the weekend.

Muntu, who last month emerged second in the Standard Chartered Nairobi International Marathon 10km run, clocked 20:44.39 to lift the Silver Jubilee crown.

"It was a great run, I am happy that my high fitness level bore fruits today," he said.

Muntu who finished third in the Peter Mulei Half Marathon in Machakos and fourth in the Masaai Mara Marathon said his focus is now on this weekend's Kass International Marathon in Eldoret. 

Coming hot on Muntu's heel was Parklands Sports Club 15km champion Sammy Nyokange who finished in 20:44.61 ahead of Stephen Rasweyi who stopped the clock in 20:48.16.

Nyokange, who finished second in last month's Rock City Marathon in Tanzania, said he is looking forward for the Athletics Kenya Kenya Commercial Bank Cross Country series in preparation for next season's road races locally and abroad.

Njeri finished in 25:22.10 to lift the women 10km race crown. Sheila Mbaku was second in 26:08.54 ahead of  Mary Wangari (27:38.00).

At the same time, Ephraim Mwangi timed 2:45.22 to win the One Mile Race as Victor Kamen came second in 2:47.01 followed by James Muange in 2:48.39.

Stephen Kihara won in the veterans category in the race organised by Silver Jubilee Foundation to sensitise the public on the plight of the elderly in the society.

Silver Jubilee Foundation Director Samuel Mwangi said they will organise a half marathon in February 2015 to raise funds to build a home and hospital for the elderly in Karugu, Kiambu County.
