NANDI, KENYA: The Council of Governor's (CoG) Pesa Mashinani referendum push suffered a big blow after Nandi governor Dr Cleophas Lagat withdrew his support.
Lagat, who about a month ago made a strong declaration in backing the plebiscite, said yesterday that MPs can take the task of pressing for more resources to counties through passage of vital Bills.
His withdrawal was however after an intense pressure from a mammoth congregation at presence of leaders at Kapng'ombe area of Mosop constituency who demanded that he comes out clearly on the position he has taken in the referendum push.
"For now, we can say No to the referendum but we also want assurance from MPs and the Senate that they will jealously guard devolution in line with Article 96 (1) of the constitution," said Lagat amid ululation from the cheering crowd.
The governor also said residents of his county are in full support of Jubilee administration under President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.
He added that leaders should go slow and concentrate on development instead of politicking. He said politics ended after the 2013 March 4, elections.
