Get tested for HIV, first lady tells residents

The wife of Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka, Dr Margaret Makelo, has appealed to the county residents to go for the voluntary HIV test.

The first lady said knowing one's status will also enable residents infected with the virus and those who are HIV negative to live healthy lives and also help reduce transmission of the virus.

Speaking yesterday in Bungoma during a forum organised by Kenya Network of HIV Positive Teachers, Dr Makelo also urged the public to avoid risky sexual behaviours and outdated cultural practices that predispose them to contracting the deadly virus.

"Time has come for us to avoid cultural practices that lead to new infections. We must now openly discuss the HIV/Aids pandemic. I am happy the teachers under Kenepote are coming out publicly about their status," she said at the meeting.
