School girls injured in scuffle over Eid ul-Fitr, spend night in Tana hyena infested bush

TANA RIVER COUNTY: Over 200 students at Mau Mau Memorial Secondary School in Tana River County suffered serious bruises on Sunday night after they went on rampage demanding permission to celebrate Eid al-Fitr.

The girls switched off the schools main power lines and sneaked out of the institution and spent the whole night in the hyena infested bush.

The students, mostly from Form 1 and 3, had also attempted to beat up their matron on duty before storming out, prompting the administration to call police.

Tana River Supreme Council of Kenyan Muslims official, Malim Jillo Buya, who was called to convince them to go back to the dormitory said the protesting girls were joined by their Christian counterparts and the situation degenerated into a protest against the administration's new regulations.

Buya said the issue has been tackled and the students engaged in the fracas suspended.

On Monday, Principal Magdalene Ngumuta claimed that the protest was instigated by a girl who was suspended from school recently after being caught with pornographic pictures.
