Kimaiyo holds crisis meeting with KWS, KFS, NYS bosses

NAIROBI, KENYA: Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo held a crisis meeting on insecurity with commanders of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), Kenya Forest Services (KFS), the Kenya Prisons Service and the National Youth Service (NYS).

The meeting came hours after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered that all security personnel and equipment of the institutions be placed under the command of the IG.

The meeting took place at the IG’s office Sunday at Jogoo House in Nairobi. In attendance were KWS Director William Kibet Kiprono, Kenya Prisons Commissioner General Isaiah Osugo, Nelson Githinji of NYS, David K Mbugua of KFS and other top police officers.

Sources said the meeting explored how to ensure speedy deployment of personnel and other resources to tackle crime. The officers also discussed issues of the new structure and command. Further, the meeting that started at 9am and ran for five hours discussed how a special unit will be created to be responding to emergencies.

“We met to discuss how we can make use of our resources to address the current insecurity and other issues,” said an insider.

Kimaiyo confirmed the meeting took place but declined to comment further. He had arrived from Mpeketoni where he had been for almost a week following last week’s terror attack in which more than 60 people died.

At the weekend, President Kenyatta said the operations of any aircraft owned by Government entities, except the Kenya Defence Forces, will be made available to the IG for the purpose of enhancing the country’s ability to combat insecurity.
