Nyahururu Boys: Where bullies carried daggers

The Della Salle Brothers, a congregation of brothers in Kenya under the auspices of the Catholic Church, in collaboration with the late Bishop Caesar Gatimu of Nyeri, founded Nyahururu Boys High School in 1964.

The boys’ boarding school in Ndaragwa, Laikipia County, started as Christian Brothers Academy, but in 1967, was renamed Laikipia High School, and then Nyahururu High School two years later. It is known for its prowess in academics, rugby, hockey, drama and ball games.

‘Nyahy Boys’-which will soon have a gym, complete with a treadmill - sits on 25 acres. Buying bread at the school canteen was more like a wrestling match in which ‘monos’ were never spared. That struggle is what some alumni remember as a ‘barrack that moulded soldiers.’ At one time, weed smoking was a common and a bully could beat you up and take you to the principal while threatening you with a dagger.

Light moments included serenading Ndaragwa Girls, the sister school at Thompson Falls.

Notable alumni guided by the motto, ‘Ready to Serve,’ include Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua, Nyandarua Deputy Governor Waithaka Mwangi and area Senator Muriuki Karue, the ‘Father of CDF.’

Others who were powered by githeri, rice and the occasional meat at the school, are Ndaragwa MP Waweru Nderitu, renowned economist and columnist Dr David Ndii, former CIC Insurance boss Nelson Kuria, Prof Mathew Theuri, the Dean of Dedan Kimathi University and Prof John Kanjogu, the Dean of Laikipia University.

Others who rode on the now-aged Nissan diesel truck on school trips are Nyandarua County Assembly Speaker Ndegwa Wahome, Stephen Njoroge, director of the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa and Thuita Mwangi, the chief engineer at the National Irrigation Board.
