Chipu clinch inaugural mCHEZA rugby tournament

Chipu Jackpot are winners of the inaugural mCHEZA Rugby Sevens festival after beating mCHEZA 295525 19-12 in a pulsating final on Saturday at the RFUEA Grounds.

It was a sweet revenge for Chipu, who had lost 17-7 to mCHEZA in the group stages. Kilonzo Junior and Vincent Onyala scored a try each to give the Phillip Wamae coached mCHEZA side a 12-7 lead. But it was a see-saw game that saw the tournament's Most Valuable player Collins Shikoli and Humphrey Mulama touch down in the second half to grab the victory for the team that was coached by Lavin Asego.

On their way to the final, Chipu Jackpot defeated Wakulima 37-0 in the semifinal, while mCHEZA beat Intralot 17-10.
Wavuvi lifted the Shield after seeing off Menengai Ruffians 10-0, while Miro beat Cheza Barbarians 18-15 to win the Bowl.

Wakulima finished third after stunning Intralot 10-5 in the third-place playoff as Maono beat Sliver Springs 20-0 to bag the women's title.

For being named MVP and topping the try scorer's chart, Shikoli, a Homeboyz player, was rewarded with Sh150,000 in cash prize (Sh100,000- MVP and Sh50,000- Top Try Scorer).

Laiser Hill's Daniel Taabu, who featured for Miro Franchise, was named the most promising player of the one-day tournament.

Meanwhile, organisers of the inaugural Maasai Sevens tournament, say preparations are in top gear ahead of the July 23-24 tournament at Champagne Park, Kipeto Village in Kiserian, Kajiado County.

Themed, 'rugby fun in the wild' and with Kenya Sevens player Biko Adema as its ambassador, the 16-team tournament is geared towards promoting the game. The tournament will be hosted in collaboration with the Kajiado county government.
