Six people killed in Isebania shootout after botched robbery

Migori: Six people died and several others sustained injuries during a botched robbery at Isebania, Kuria West Sub-County in Migori County on Thursday evening.

Migori County Commander David Kirui said among the six are four suspected robbers and two civilians who were caught up in the crossfire.

“The incident took place around 6.30pm at Isebania Township. Four thugs armed with AK47 riffles stormed the hardware shop belonging to one Wilson Saiya, a former police officer. The robbers were seen by members of the public who raised alarm prompting the police to respond swiftly. The robbers then ran into a bush on sighting the police,” Kirui said.

According to witnesses, some members of the public alongside the police pursued the thugs into the bush where a shootout ensued. The thugs were gunned down and two civilians also lost their lives in the gunfire while several others sustained injuries.

Three of those injured were admitted to the County referral hospital and doctors confirmed they were in a stable condition.

"The police gunned down the four robbers, two AK47 riffles and four rounds of ammunition were also recovered," the County Commander confirmed.

This incident comes barely a week after suspected thugs were arrested and home-made gun recovered in the same Sub-County that borders Tanzania, begging the question about the security at the border.
