Amani National Congress party leader Musalia Mudavadi has asked the government to apologise to Kenyans for the crisis in the education sector over the teachers’ strike.

Speaking in Kakamega yesterday during boda boda operators Sacco launch hours after Knut called off the strike, Mudavadi said the move by the government to rush to the courts through Teacher’s Service Commission (TSC) was a big hindrance to the salary negotiations.

“The Industrial court ordered the government to pay teachers 50-60 per cent salary hike effective from July 1st. The government through TSC immediately moved to the Court of Appeal to block the increment this indicated they were not willing to pay teachers. They must apologise to all Kenyans,” he said Mudavadi.

The former deputy premier noted that teachers have obeyed court orders and asked the government to uphold the law and initiate salary negotiations to avert the crisis in future. “Teachers have shown good will to go back to class on Monday. The government should also show they respect the courts and pay them to avert another strike because parents and students have suffered in the last one month,” he added.

Mudavadi also urged the government to drop the hard line stance and pay teachers to appreciate their service.

“The government should show they value services offered by teachers. They also pay taxes and they need to be respected. Negotiations must begin immediately by all stakeholders in the education sectors. We cannot allow our children to suffer again,” he said.
