The launch of the polio vaccination campaign in high risk areas by the Ministry of Health in response to last year’s outbreak is good news.
However, a section of religious leaders are still opposed to it after questioning its safety. Considering the influence religious leaders have over their followers, some caregivers might fail to have their children vaccinated.
Last year the tetanus vaccination campaign did not achieve the desired results after the Catholic Church claimed the vaccine was laced with a birth control hormone. The Ministry of Health should step up its sensitization campaign to allay these fears.
