High Court suspends implementation of various clauses of security law

NAIROBI, KENYA: High Court on Friday temporarily suspended the implementation of of various clauses of the controversial security laws act pending hearing and determination of a case by CORD.

Among the clauses suspended is 12, 29, 48, 56, 58, 58.

In his ruling, Justice George Odunga said that some of the clauses touch on fundamental issues in the bill of rights.

Cord leader Raila Odinga welcomed the ruling saying through it the court has protected rights of the people.

“You cannot compromise security of Kenyans in the name of democracy, in protecting Kenyans you must also protect their rights,” he said.

Raila criticised National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi’s conduct during passage of bill. He said the scene was like a movie. “We are going the journey to the end, Kenya needs to be rescued.”

President Uhuru Kenyatta signed the new security law on December 19, saying it did not go against the bill of rights or any provision of the constitution, but opposition groups have said the measures, which will allow suspects to be held without charge for 360 days, up from 90 days, threaten liberties and free speech.
