Police link Briton to friend's death in Gachie, Nairobi

Police are holding a British national in connection with the death of his diabetic girlfriend in their house in Gachie, Nairobi.

The Briton is accused of flushing her medicine down the toilet.

According to police, Carl Cary Singleton, 42, willfully disposed of his girlfriend's drugs. He is also accused of beating her.

British media said Singleton met Peris Ashley Agumbi Mumtah, 22, on Facebook.

Ms Agumbi was a student at the University of Nairobi's Lower Kabete campus.

Police said yesterday they intended to introduce murder charges against the Briton.

The man was arrested last Sunday after Agumbi reported that Singleton had beaten her up and flushed her medicine down the toilet.

Fell sick

She later fell sick and was rushed to Aga Khan Hospital for emergency treatment before she was transferred to Ladnan Hospital in Eastleigh where she died.

"She was diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension and respiratory failure," said a medic.

Singleton has been in the country since May 23 when he arrived as a tourist.

He appeared in court last Monday and was remanded in custody for seven days after police asked for time to file a murder charge today.

According to the UK's Daily Mail newspaper, Singleton met Agumbi on Facebook two years ago. He came to Kenya on a tourist visa to spend time with her.

The British paper said Singleton's arrest came days after he sent a message to his younger brother Steven, 21, on Facebook to say he had extended his trip by a further six months and would be home in February.
