Chief Justice Willy Mutunga releases Senior Counsel privileges

Nairobi, Kenya: Chief Justice Dr. Willy Mutunga has released guidelines on privileges Senior Counsel are entitled to.

Dr. Willy Mutunga said that Senior Counsel (SC) will have the exclusive right to sit in front of the Bench (Judges and Magistrates).

“The SC shall also sit within the Bar in all courts in which there is a Bar separating the area of Senior Counsel from the general area,” Dr. Mutunga said.

Dr. Mutunga who is also the President of the Supreme Court said that SC will wear sleeved waistcoats as worn by Judges in the Court of Appeal when appearing robed before a Court or Tribunal.

“The SC shall enjoy other privileges as the Council of the Law Society of Kenya may consider appropriate,” Dr. Mutunga said.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Secretary/CEO Mr. Apollo Mboya said that the privileges are effective from October 17, 2014.

Mr. Mboya said that the privileges are contained in Legal Notice No. 147 on The Advocates (Senior Counsel Conferment and Privileges) Amendment Rules, 2014
